Choose PNG for transparency and crisp graphics, not as a repair step

PNG is useful for transparent cutouts, interface screenshots, diagrams, logos, and flat-color graphics. Its lossless encoding preserves the pixels supplied to it, but converting an already compressed JPG to PNG cannot restore detail that JPG discarded. Expect some photo files to become larger.

Common tasks and a safer order of work

A cutout needs a transparent background

  1. Confirm the source actually contains transparency before conversion.
  2. Download the PNG and place it over both a light and a dark background.
  3. Inspect edge halos and small openings in the subject before publishing.

A screenshot must keep small text crisp

  1. Keep the original pixel dimensions unless the destination requires another size.
  2. Convert once, then inspect labels and one-pixel lines at 100%.
  3. Compress or resize only after the PNG output is visually correct.

Several assets need one editable format

  1. Test layered, animated, or vector-origin files individually.
  2. Assume the conversion produces a flattened still image unless the output explicitly proves otherwise.

What the settings change

Transparency

PNG can preserve an existing alpha channel, but it does not automatically remove a background from an opaque JPG.

Lossless output

Lossless means the PNG encoder does not add new lossy damage. It does not reverse compression or recreate missing source detail.

File weight

Detailed photographs can be substantially heavier as PNG than as JPG or WebP. Use PNG when its transparency or crisp-edge strengths are relevant.

Result checklist

  • View transparent results on contrasting backgrounds.
  • Inspect text, icons, and flat-color edges at 100%.
  • Compare the PNG file weight with the destination limit.
  • Confirm the output is a still, flattened image when the source had layers or animation.
  • Keep the editable or original source separately.

Limits and recovery steps

The converted PNG has no transparency.
Conversion cannot infer a background to remove. Use Background Remover or an editor first when the source is opaque.
The PNG is much larger than the source.
That can be normal for photographs. Use JPG or WebP if transparency and lossless graphics are not required.
A blurry JPG stays blurry.
PNG preserves the converted pixels but does not restore detail lost before conversion.
